The polyols used in the polyurethanes synthesis are polyhydroxy products with molecular weight between 400 and 6000 and with functionality (number of hydroxyl reactive groups per molecul ) between 2 and 8.
They may be polyether (polyether polyols) or polyester (polyester polyols) and are available in different chain length from linear to branched.
The characteristics of the polyol used, in particular the flexibility of its molecular structure, functionality and molecular weight, contribute in large measure to determine the level of reticulate and the final properties of the polyurethane polymer that will be formed when this will react with an isocyanate.
